EigenLayer is adding ERC-20 tokens as restakable assets and testing permissionless token support

  • According to Eigen Labs, permissionless token support for the EigenLayer protocol is being rolled out.
  • The new functionality will allow any ERC-20 token to be added as a restakable asset and will debut on the mainnet the following week.

EigenLayer, an Ethereum restaking project, is expanding the protocol’s support for permissionless tokens.

According to Eigen Labs, in a post to X, this feature will allow any ERC-20 token to be added as a restakable asset. It also expands the range of assets that can enhance the security of decentralized networks and unlocks the cryptoeconomic security of an infinite number of ERC-20 tokens on the EigenLayer protocol.

Eigen Labs said that after a first test phase on the testnet, it will start a mainnet rollout the following week. The company added that user interface support for restakers will be implemented later in Q3.

Earlier this year, private capital firm Andreessen Horowitz invested $100 million in Eigen Labs, the primary development team behind the EigenLayer protocol. DefiLama claims that the project’s assets are currently valued at over $12 billion in total.

With EigenLayer’s protocol, users can allocate their ether stakes to economically safe third-party protocols by either natively restaking validators’ ether stakes or by using liquid staking tokens.
