Did Drake Just Make a Sneaker Ad Reference to a Solana Meme Coin?

  • Drake’s clothing line NOCTA has been promoting a forthcoming sneaker collaboration with Nike in a way that some people think alludes to a popular meme.

Aubrey Drake Graham is getting ready for the newest release from his NOCTA sportswear brand, which he developed in partnership with Nike. Amidst the recent drama between him and Kendrick Lamar over music, some cryptocurrency traders think he may have made a reference to a coin that is becoming more and more popular.

In early August, Banana Tape Wall (BTW) was established on Pump.fun, reaching a market capitalization of $18 million at its height. This Solana viral coin, which features an accompanying image of a banana tied on a wall, is exactly what it sounds like.

The brand NOCTA used gray duct tape to attach the shoe to the wall in their most recent advertisement for their all-yellow Hot Step II sneakers. Twitter for cryptocurrency went crazy.

Was this a mere coincidental promotion for a meme coin by Drake’s shoe brand? Orangie, a developer of cryptocurrency content, tweeted. You never know who we know, the meme currency added, retweeting the brand’s article and pouring gasoline to the fire.

After the NOCTA post, BTW jumped 38.25% in less than an hour and a half, reaching a market cap of $9.51 million.

However, not everybody is persuaded.

Although the NOCTA ad might be alluding to Banana Tape Wall, the meme coin itself alludes to Comedian, a 2019 work of art by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. The installation, which is essentially a banana nailed to a wall, made headlines worldwide when it had its contentious debut at Art Basel Miami.

Two of the artworks raised $120,000 at Art Basel Miami, and the third was donated to the Guggenheim Museum. A 2023 art student claimed to be ravenous after consuming a banana that was on display at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul and skipping breakfast.

People who are not involved in the blockchain bubble, like the fashion and lifestyle platform Hypebeast, think the advertisement is only a nod to the controversial artwork rather than the meme coin that was inspired by it.

Drake is a well-known art enthusiast who has amassed an extensive collection that is seen in his Toosie Slide music video from 2020. This collection includes pieces by KAWS and Andy Warhol, whose own artwork with bananas is memorable for being featured on the album The Velvet Underground & Nico.

Damien Hirst, a controversial artist who experimented with NFTs in 2021 with his The Currency collection, designed the artwork for his 2019 record Certified Lover Boy.

The rapper used his enormous wealth to assist with the restoration of an art theme park that features pieces by artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and David Hockney, as if to show that he differs from the rest of us.

Drake, on the other hand, has made some somewhat modest public forays into the realm of cryptocurrency. He has demonstrated his proficiency with the technology through a partnership with Stake, a cryptocurrency betting site, and by flashing an iced-out Ledger hardware wallet.
