In a bid to cement its place in digital culture, Nexo and over 35 cryptocurrency organizations have launched a collaborative campaign to secure an official bitcoin emoji. The initiative, dubbed ‘Bitcoin Deserves an Emoji,’ aims to gather 50,000 signatures via a petition to the Unicode Consortium, demonstrating the unified voice of the crypto community and emphasizing the cultural and technological significance of bitcoin.

Led by Nexo, the coalition comprises prominent names such as Brink, Bitget, Chainalysis, Kraken, and others, representing a vast community of over 170 million individuals worldwide.
Within a week of its launch, the campaign has already garnered significant support, amassing 10,000 endorsements. This strong momentum underscores the collective desire for a dedicated bitcoin symbol, highlighting the need for representation of the cryptocurrency on digital platforms.

According to Alex Svanevik, CEO and co-founder of Nansen, supporting Nexo’s petition aligns perfectly with their commitment to fostering inclusivity and expression within the crypto space. The campaign’s advocates believe that the introduction of a bitcoin emoji is long overdue, especially considering bitcoin’s substantial market dominance, valued at $1.34 trillion.

The initiative draws inspiration from previous efforts by mainstream brands, such as Taco Bell and Tinder, to establish their own emojis. Kosta Kantchev, co-founder and executive chairman of Nexo, emphasized the necessity of a unified symbol for bitcoin across all keyboards, echoing sentiments shared by the coalition.

At the core of the campaign lies the belief that bitcoin, as a pioneer in the cryptocurrency realm, deserves representation within the Unicode Standard. Established in 1991, the Unicode Consortium serves as a nonprofit organization dedicated to developing and promoting the Unicode Standard, facilitating seamless communication across diverse platforms, programs, and languages. The collective effort of 35 cryptocurrency organizations underscores the significance of integrating bitcoin into this global standard, further solidifying its position in digital communication and culture.
