Vitalik Buterin of Ethereum Registers “Dacc.eth” Amid Call for Conscientious AI Development

  • The dacc.eth domain has been registered by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin for defensive accelerationism.
  • The concept put forth by Buterin promotes a more circumspect and democratic method of technical advancement.
  • Buterin highlights the necessity of tech development that balances risk mitigation with benefit maximization.

Today, months after writing a blog post introducing the concept of defensive accelerationism, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin registered the dacc.eth domain name.

There has been conjecture over Vitalik’s intentions regarding the new domain name since its registration.

Buterin Supports Ethical Development in Technology

Defensive (or Decentralized or Differential) Acceleration is what the acronym “d/acc” stands for. In November 2023, it became part of the tech vernacular when Buterin wrote a blog post promoting the concept in opposition to the more widely accepted effective accelerationism (e/acc) approach, which many industry leaders had adopted.

Buterin addressed the techno-optimist ideology of a16z co-founder Marc Andreessen in a piece titled “My Techno-Optimism.” He demanded that scientific advancement be approached in a more balanced manner.

The posts focused on the dangers associated with emerging technologies, especially AI. He said that if AI goes awry and a super-intelligent AI decides to turn against humans, it could lead to the extinction of humans. Other threats, meanwhile, include the emergence of digital dictatorship brought on by advancements in AI.

Therefore, Buterin offers d/acc as a tactic to stop AI from becoming dominant in the future or from making any development errors that could endanger all of humanity. He promotes a careful approach to development with d/acc. This would be accomplished by preserving a more democratic global order that shuns centralization as the default response to societal ills.

He acknowledged that authorities have been sluggish to approve scientific advancements, especially in the medical field, but he thinks e/acc supporters have gone too far. He mentioned one of those extreme use scenarios, which is the application of AI for military objectives.

Vitalik envisions a future when technological advancements are driven more by defense than by offense, thanks to d/acc. This entails taking into account the number of lives that technology has saved. It would also entail thinking about how it will protect freedom and democracy rather than being an instrument of dominance.

Finally, Buterin’s proposal urged all relevant parties—including the public, legislators, tech developers, and policymakers—to work together to create technologies that minimize dangers and increase benefits.
