- According to his staff, Tigran Gambaryan had to have his tonsils removed and has a herniated disc.
According to his legal team, Tigran Gambaryan, a former senior executive at cryptocurrency exchange Binance who was arrested in Nigeria in February, is rapidly losing health and is still not allowed to see his attorneys.
According to a statement, after the Abuja court adjourned for a holiday on July 16, the situation for Gambaryans has allegedly gotten significantly worse. The next hearing isn’t scheduled until October 11, but since July 26 his attorneys haven’t been allowed to visit their client inside the Kuje prison.
According to Gambaran’s team, the former executive at Binance has a herniated disc that may need to be surgically repaired with significant risk. In order to avoid blood clots, his limited mobility has also made him need to take blood thinners.
The statement also claims that he had pneumonia and recurring throat infections while in custody, which required the removal of his tonsils.
The reports stand in sharp contrast to recent declarations from Nigerian authorities asserting that Gambaryan is doing well in custody and does not have any major medical conditions.
In the past, Gambaryan suffered from malaria while under the custody of Nigeria and even passed out in court.
Yuki, the spouse of Gambaryan, last saw her husband on February 24, the day he left for what was supposed to be a quick business trip to Nigeria. She claimed that their two small children, ages five and ten, are finding it difficult to adjust to their father’s absence.
“My husband Tigran left our home for a work trip almost six months ago, and I have no idea when he will return,” the woman stated in the statement. His health is very bad right now and becoming worse every day.
In her passionate plea for her husband’s release, Yuki Gambaryan has detailed the terrible effects the situation has had on her family, including seeing their small kid crying because he misses his father.
Uncertainty surrounds the circumstances of Gambaryan’s arrest. In February, he received an invitation from Nigerian authorities to attend a conference in Abuja. But after the meeting on February 26, he had to give up his passport and has been detained in Nigeria ever since.
The family is pleading with the Nigerian government to release Gambaryan for humanitarian reasons so he can go back to his family and get the vital medical care he needs. Following US politicians’ direct involvement in the matter by paying a prison visit to the former Binance executive, Nigeria is expected to face increased pressure.
Gambaryan’s team, meanwhile, claims that blocking him from seeing his attorneys seems to go against both Nigerian prison policies and the country’s constitution, which both protect inmates’ rights to speak with their attorneys.
