- The CEO of Toronto-based WonderFi, Dean Skurka, was abducted and later freed upon paying a ransom of $1 million.
According to a CBC report, Dean Skurka, the CEO of WonderFi, a company based in Toronto, was abducted and then freed after paying a $1 million ransom.
After being pushed into a car in downtown Toronto on Wednesday, Skurka was taken hostage, according to the complaint. He then made a $1 million electronic payment and was freed.
According to the story, the cryptocurrency CEO stated that he “is safe, and that the funds and data of company’s clients were not impacted.” Police stated that the inquiry is still ongoing but did not provide any other information.
This is by no means the first instance that thieves have targeted someone who owns cryptocurrency or works in the industry. For instance, in July, four individuals kidnapped and killed a 29-year-old Bitcoin user, stealing three bitcoins valued at over $200,000 at the time.
Last November, WonderFi announced that it held almost half of all licensed exchanges in Canada as of a year earlier.
