Square Enix Teams Up with Animoca Brands for Ethereum NFT Game Symbiogenesis

Square Enix, renowned for iconic JRPG titles like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, is venturing into the realm of crypto-based NFT gaming in collaboration with leading metaverse investment firm Animoca Brands.

The partnership, announced on Monday, signifies Square Enix’s foray into the burgeoning world of non-fungible tokens (NFTs) with its upcoming game “Symbiogenesis,” accompanied by a collection of 10,000 Ethereum-based NFTs.

Animoca Brands Japan will provide extensive support for the game’s marketing efforts, leveraging its expertise in international expansion, NFT sales, and collaboration promotion with its existing portfolio companies.

Kensuke Amo, COO of Animoca Brands Japan, expressed excitement about the collaboration, highlighting Square Enix’s reputation for delivering world-class entertainment content and intellectual property.

“Symbiogenesis” is set in a post-apocalyptic high fantasy world, where players assume the roles of their Ethereum NFT avatars in a narrative-driven adventure. Interactions with other in-game NFTs, minted on the Polygon network, add depth to the gaming experience, with ownership of an NFT granting access to the game.

The game unfolds on a floating continent in a future Earth plagued by pollution, where humans battle mythical creatures like dragons for survival. It will be prominently featured on Animoca Brands Japan’s upcoming NFT launchpad, slated to debut this summer, supporting both Ethereum and Polygon networks.

This collaboration marks a continuation of the partnership between Square Enix and Animoca Brands. Notably, Square Enix previously led an investment round in “The Sandbox,” an NFT game owned by Animoca, incorporating assets from its Dungeon Siege game into Sandbox’s creation tools.

Moreover, Square Enix’s engagement with crypto extends beyond gaming, as evidenced by its launch of Final Fantasy VII-based NFTs on Polygon in 2022 and investments in Bitcoin gaming platform Zebedee. Recent investments in Hyperplay and Elixer Games underscore Square Enix’s commitment to the Web3 experience.

Naoyuki Tamate, Producer of Symbiogenesis, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Animoca, highlighting the strategic endeavor to introduce the Web3 experience to a broader audience.
