Sony’s Soneium blockchain, which is based on Optimism, is releasing its first public testnet

  • After hinting at it last week, Sony Block Solutions Labs is announcing the introduction of a developer incubation program for its public Minato testnet and Soneium network.
  • Using the Optimism tech stack as its foundation, the Soneium blockchain is an Ethereum Layer 2.

For its Soneium network, Sony’s blockchain branch, Sony Block Solutions Labs, is introducing a testnet and developer incubator program.

The company said in a press release that “this dual initiative marks a significant milestone in Sony Group Corporation’s entry in Web3—possibly leveraging its vast global reach and technological expertise across entertainment, gaming, and consumer electronics sectors to catalyze ecosystem growth and accelerate adoption.”

Built on the Op Stack and Ethereum Layer 2, the Soneium blockchain aims to give developers a “cost-effective development environment” for creating consumer-grade applications. Early network experimenters include Circle, Optimism, Alchemy, The Graph, Chainlink, and the Astar Network.

The project was started in 2023 as a joint venture between Sony Group Corporation and Startale Labs, and Sony Network Communications Labs was just awarded the project. Additionally, the firms want to include the ASTR token as “a key asset” on the Minato testnet, which is interoperable with EVMs.

Sony said last week, hinting at the testnet debut, that Astar Network will also combine its zkEVM assets and underlying infrastructure with Soneium to increase the new chain’s initial liquidity.

The Soneium Spark incubation initiative will involve a number of Sony companies, including SonyMusic, SONY Pictures, and the Sony Innovation Fund. In addition to having access to a network of exchanges and venture capitalists, applicants will get up to $100,000 in beginning money.

WhaleFin, a cryptocurrency exchange that was previously owned by Sony subsidiary Quetta Web Co., is set to undergo a rebranding and relaunch this year.
