Phantom wallet defeats PayPal to secure No. 2 app in Google Play store

  • In the Google Play store, the cryptocurrency and NFT wallet Phantom outperformed other free finance apps like PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, and others.

PayPal was beaten out by the cryptocurrency and NFT wallet Phantom in the Google Play store’s top apps.

Phantom ranked second among free finance applications. It’s ahead of TON Wallet, Chime, Venmo, Zelle, Google Wallet, and Capital One Mobile, but it lags behind Cash App. Data from the Google Play store indicates that Phantom has had over 5 million downloads on the platform.

The Phantom wallet app ranks No. 14 overall in the Google Play store, surpassing apps for the streaming services Tubi and Max, Indeed, and Meta’s social media site Threads.

Phantom is a hot wallet that is not custodial, much like Rainbow and MetaMask. Phantom was initially developed on Solana, but in April 2023 it added support for Ethereum and Polygon. The wallet also included support for BRC-20 tokens, Bitcoin Ordinals, and Bitcoin by the end of that year.

Phantom said earlier this week that it has paid an unknown amount to buy Bitski, a wallet platform supported by a16z crypto, Galaxy Digital, and other significant investors.

Phantom team raised $109 million in Series B fundraising led by Paradigm in January 2022, giving the company unicorn status surpassing $1.2 billion.
