Energy Minister Terje Aasland emphasized that cryptocurrency mining has significant environmental impacts, including large greenhouse gas emissions. He explained that some mining companies have set up operations in northern Norway due to the availability of inexpensive energy.
However, Norway does not want to host these energy-intensive businesses, as they are considered a burden on the country’s resources.
“We want serious actors who contribute to society. The computer industry that serves the community is important to us,” Aasland stated. He highlighted the government’s preference for businesses that play a more beneficial role in the country.
Despite the push against cryptocurrency mining, Norway still values the data center industry as a whole. Digitalization Minister Karianne Tung supports establishing stricter controls on the sector to ensure it aligns with the country’s objectives. “We need to be selective about who we allow and who we don’t want,” Tung noted.
Norway has previously attempted to address cryptocurrency mining in the country. In 2021, the country considered supporting a ban on mining and explored reversing power tax cuts for data centers, which also benefit mining operations.
