Matter Labs abandons its contentious “zero-knowledge” trademark attempt

  • As of the time of publication, the ZK trademark application was still active, according to the US trademark website.

On June 2, Matter Labs, the company that created the Ethereum layer-2 network zkSync, declared that it would no longer be pursuing trademark applications for “zero-knowledge (ZK).”

The company was closely watched last week because it was trying to trademark the ZK name. Industry players that strongly objected to Matter Labs’ conduct included Turing Award recipient Shafi Goldwasser, co-founders of Polygon Sandeep Nailwal and Brendan Farmer, CEO of StarkWare Eli Ben-Sasson, co-founder of Polyhedra Network Tiancheng Xie, and others.

According to these experts, ZK is a public good that no business should own. They went on to say that Matter Labs’ conduct went against the fundamental principles upheld by the cryptocurrency sector.

In response to these demands, Matter Labs announced that, while acknowledging the community’s efforts, it will no longer be pursuing the phrase as a trademark.

CEO of Matter Labs Alex Gluchowski affirmed the company’s stance and added that it wasn’t a simple choice.

The ZK term’s application status on the US Patent and Trademark Office website indicated that the procedure was still ongoing despite its public declaration. The trademark was filed on February 27.

The website states that the application has not yet been assigned to an examiner but has been accepted by the Office based on meeting the minimal filing requirements.
