- Celo’s Ethereum Layer 2 transition is contingent upon cLabs selecting its preferred tech stack.
- cLabs has selected the technology stack that it wants to use for Celo’s Layer 2 upgrade.
- Several solution vendors, including Polygon (MATIC) Labs, submitted proposals for the project.
- Celo’s Layer 2 transfer still needs to go through some governance procedures in spite of cLabs’ decision.
After eight months, Celo’s struggle to select the ideal tech stack for its intended switch to an Ethereum Layer 2 chain has finally come to an end.
The Celo Network’s creators, cLabs, originally disclosed plans in July 2023 to switch to an Ethereum Layer 2 chain, designating Optimism’s OP Stack as the preferred tech stack for the network. But after other solution providers put their hats in the ring to compete for Celo’s business—Polygon (MATIC) Labs, Offchain Labs, and Matter Labs—what was probably supposed to be an easy procedure turned into a convoluted issue quite rapidly.
Following months of evaluations and comparisons, cLabs has chosen what it thinks is the ideal stack for Celo’s requirements.
Celo Completes a Circle
cLabs said on Monday, April 22, that it had selected the same solution it had eight months earlier—the OP Stack—for Celo’s Layer 2 transition.
The creators claim that before selecting their choice, they took into account a number of aspects, such as positive-sum growth, Ethereum alignment, and time to production. They argued that, while remaining compatible with other solutions, the OP Stack offered the most straightforward route ahead, implying a potential inclusion of Polygon’s Type 1 Prover in the future.
cLabs said that by bridge to Ethereum with OP Stack, Celo will be able to keep its distinctive features, such as single block finality and cheap gas fees, while also getting 50% higher throughput and increased security.
Haste for Implementation
In accordance with Celo governance procedures, cLabs has announced two community calls for April 26 and May 2 to further discuss the plan before to holding an actual on-chain community vote. They have also asked for input on their decision.
If everything goes according to plan, developers intend to launch the Celo Layer 2 testnet, or CEL2, in the summer of 2024.
Celo chooses the OP Stack by joining well-known projects like Worldcoin’s World Chain and Coinbase’s Base.
