In an address at the Libertarian Convention, Donald Trump promises to free Ross Ulbricht, end CBDCs, and support self-custody

  • After serving 11 years of a life sentence for founding the dark web marketplace Silk Road, Ross Ulbricht is the first candidate from either of the two major parties to support clemency. Donald Trump is the first to do so.
  • An unimpressed group of Libertarian Party members cheered Trump’s comments against Ulbricht and cryptocurrency.

Boos and jeers marred the entirety of former President and front-runner Donald Trump’s historic speech to the Libertarian Party convention last night. This was the first time a major party candidate addressed a rival convention.

I believe we should win jointly if you nominate me or at the very least vote for me. Why is the Libertarian Party receiving three percent of the vote? Trump announced to a chorus of jeers early on.

Many of Trump’s policy statements, as well as his promise to name a Libertarian to a cabinet position and to senior positions, were met with a more mixed bag of applause and derision.

However, Trump made a significant impression on the audience approximately three-quarters of the way through his forty-minute speech when he mentioned cryptocurrency policy in passing.

He promised to back the sector and commute Ross Ulbricht’s sentence “on day one,” which is a cause that members of the Libertarian Party find particularly appealing.

The crowd erupted in lively cries of “Free Ross!” for about thirty seconds when Trump announced he would reduce Ulbricht’s sentence, making it the first such commitment made by a prominent Republican or Democratic contender. Many of the attendees even had signs bearing the catchphrase.

Ulbricht is presently incarcerated for life without the chance of release due to his involvement in the establishment and management of the Silk Road dark web bazaar, which was crucial to the early development of Bitcoin.

According to contemporaneous media reports, Ulbricht’s cause was supported by important Trump aides, and Trump allegedly pondered clemency for Ulbricht at the end of his presidential term.

But Trump departed office without doing anything to support Ulbricht, also going by the alias “Dread Pirate Roberts.”

Trump mostly used his comments on cryptocurrencies to establish his disapproval of the current government. In a teleprompter reading, Trump pledged to “end Joe Biden’s drive to destroy cryptocurrency” by guaranteeing that the industry won’t be “driven overseas,” defending the freedom to self-custody, and opposing the creation of a CBDC.

Trump said, “With your vote, I will keep Elizabeth Warren and her goons away from your Bitcoin.” He was addressing the fifty million cryptocurrency owners in the country.

In what was one of his shortest campaign speeches to date, Trump made only a few quick words about cryptocurrencies.

Trump, who was previously skeptical of cryptocurrencies, seems to be changing his mind in recent weeks. Just before his speech at the Libertarian Convention, he expressed a support of the cryptocurrency business on the social media platform Truth Social.
