How Aptos daily transactions increased by 1,466% in three days due to a single game

  • By the end of May, the 7-day moving average of active addresses on Aptos had increased from 61,000 at the beginning of the month to over 150,000.
  • The number of user transactions on Aptos surged to 47 million on the 7-day moving average.

At the end of May, the 7-day moving average of the total number of user transactions on Aptos jumped to 47 million, demonstrating a sharp increase given that at the beginning of the month, the moving average had never above 1 million. The total number of transactions, not averaged, came to 156 million.

For those who don’t know, Aptos made a big splash when it was released in October 2022. It was a product of Facebook’s Libra blockchain project and had a large number of well-known supporters.

Because it was designed to be much easier to build upon and used the Move programming language, it was positioned as a new alternative to Solana for developers.

In the realm of cryptocurrencies, Aptos is a well-known brand and the 17th largest network by total value locked, despite not always being the most spoken about.

Aptos appears to have a tendency to attract well-known partners; it has worked with Brevan Howard, Microsoft, Universal Pictures, and Google Cloud on a number of projects and activities aimed at enhancing the ecosystem and increasing adoption.

Not any recent mass adoption of the Aptos blockchain, but rather a new game called Tapos seems to be the cause of the latest growth.

The game Tapos is a clicker. A transaction that increases the player’s counter is carried out with each click. With every click, players can tickle a cat in the game and receive HEART tokens in return (however there is a very small gas price for these transactions, around 0.000008 APT, or less than one-hundredth of a penny).

More clicks should result in more tokens because the amount of Hearts received depends on how many tickles a player completed during a gaming session relative to the total number of tickles completed by all players.

It makes sense that we would witness such a spike in transactions given the game’s design. By the end of May, the 7-day moving average of active addresses on Aptos had increased from 61,000 at the beginning of the month to over 150,000. Given that the game appears to have launched closer to the end of May, this may have some bearing on it.

However, the Tapos account announced on May 26 that the campaign was over and that it will update with the game’s next steps. The project claimed to have over 63,000 users and over 323 million transactions in a few of days. The high transaction count naturally ended with Tapos, and the moving average has now begun to decline once more.

Even if it was fleeting, Tapos’s success shows off some of Aptos’ strong points. This kind of transaction demand would be too excessive for a game on certain higher fee networks, and the counter technique also uses some built-in Aptos features.
