Hacker on Poloniex Transfers $3.3 Million in Ether to Tornado Cash

  • Prior to this, the stolen money had been dormant for 178 days.
  • Over the course of two hours, the hacker transferred 11 batches of 100 ether to Tornado Cash.
  • Additionally, last week, the wallet transferred $32 million worth of bitcoin to an unidentified wallet.

Blockchain information indicates that in November, a hacker who made off with $125 million from Poloniex’s hot wallets sent 1,100 ETH to Tornado Cash, an authorized coin mixer.

The roughly $3.3 million worth of ether was moved to Tornado Cash on Tuesday in batches of 100 ETH each after it had been dormant for 178 days.

Additionally, on April 30, the $32 million-worth of 501 bitcoin (BTC) were transferred to an anonymous wallet by the Poloniex hacker. It still has $181 million worth of cryptocurrencies distributed over several blockchains, according to Arkham figures.

Users can mix assets across multiple wallets for a long period using the Tornado Cash technology, which obfuscates cryptocurrency tokens. Shortly after North Korean hackers Lazarus used it to try to hide money taken from the $625 million Axie Infinity attack, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned it in 2022.

The Heco Bridge incident, which occurred shortly after the Poloniex attack, involved $12 million that Lazarus Group had laundered using Tornado Cash, according to a March investigation by blockchain security company Elliptic.
