- Dogecoin’s face, Kabosu, died this morning at an approximate age of 18, according to his owner.
- In the last day, trades of doge have been made totaling about $2.8 billion.
Dogecoin had two short-lived surges after the passing of its pioneer.
News of the dog’s passing at 1:40 a.m. ET triggered a meme, which set off the initial price spike.
Dogecoin’s official X account posted on Friday, saying, “Today, Kabosu, our community’s shared friend and inspiration, peacefully passed, in the arms of her person.” There is no way to quantify the influence that one dog has had on the globe.
Dogecoin was created in December 2013 in response to a Shiba Inu-based meme that became popular in the early 2010s. DOGE, which is now topping the field in terms of market value, served as the inspiration for several other well-known memecoins with dog themes.
Around 11:00 a.m. ET, the most well-known memecoin devotee tweeted about Kabosu’s passing, causing the second jump.
Elon Musk, the CEO of SpaceX, X (formerly Twitter), and Tesla, shared a photo of a gorilla participating in the Shiba joke. Musk wrote on X that OG Doge and his friend Harambe had ascended to paradise. The gorilla’s presence suggests yet another facet of the history of the internet.
In May of 2016, a young visitor to the Cincinnati Zoo climbed under a fence and went into the outdoor gorilla enclosure, where Harambe grabbed and dragged him violently. A zoo staff shot and killed the 17-year-old gorilla, which sparked a flurry of memes and tributes on the internet.
Elon Musk, the richest person on the planet, supported meme coins and tweeted regularly, which helped fuel the dogecoin market’s meteoric rise in the summer of 2021. In December 2023, Musk said he “hardly” gives cryptocurrency any thought.
DOGE is selling at roughly $0.17, up 3.8% over the previous day. Over that period, doge valued about $2.8 billion had been traded.
Correlated tokens saw momentary surges on the news as well, including FLOKI (FLOKI) and Shiba Inu (SHIB).
