A former security engineer, Shakeeb Ahmed, has been sentenced to three years in prison for hacking two decentralized crypto exchanges and stealing over $12 million in crypto assets. This case marks the first-ever conviction for hacking a smart contract, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Damian Williams.
Ahmed, 34, pleaded guilty to hacking the exchanges. Williams stated that regardless of the sophistication of the hack, those responsible for such destructive hacks will face justice and consequences, including imprisonment and the forfeiture of stolen crypto.
Ahmed’s criminal activities involved using phony pricing data to generate fees worth $9 million, which he then withdrew in crypto. He carried out a second attack on the decentralized exchange Nirvana Finance shortly afterward, laundering the stolen funds through crypto mixers to conceal ownership.
The former engineer was ordered to forfeit approximately $12.3 million, including a significant quantity of cryptocurrency, and to pay $5 million in restitution to the affected crypto exchange and Nirvana Finance, as reported by the Justice Department.
Ahmed faced a potential four-year sentence requested by prosecutors but expressed remorse during his hearing, apologizing for his actions. He stated, “I lost my way. I apologize to the users of Nirvana Finance. I was drawn to technology, but I got lost. During the pandemic, I turned to crypto.”
Ahmed’s sentencing highlights the consequences of criminal activity in the crypto space and serves as a warning to others engaging in similar acts. It also emphasizes the commitment of law enforcement to hold hackers accountable and bring them to justice.
Sentencing Marks a Turning Point in Smart Contract Security
Shakeeb Ahmed’s conviction and sentencing for hacking smart contracts underscore the seriousness of such cybercrimes and the law’s commitment to pursuing justice. This landmark case sends a clear message to the crypto community that novel and sophisticated hacking methods will not go unpunished. Ahmed’s remorse and the forfeiture of stolen funds serve as a reminder of the consequences of engaging in destructive hacks within the rapidly evolving world of decentralized finance.
