- The principal scientist of Ethereum also urged Layer 2 developers to give better decentralization and cross-L2 interoperability top priority.
Vitalik Buterin, co-founder and chief scientist of Ethereum, thinks developers should focus on striking a balance between the needs of seasoned dApp users and web3 novices.
The founder of Base, Jesse Pollak, was informed by Buterin during an appearance on August 1 at the BaseCamp Summit that the expansion of the Ethereum ecosystem has made it possible for it to accommodate millions of users.
As an ecosystem, we’re going through a significant shift from creating primarily these cumbersome small-scale apps to to ideas that, should they be successful, tens of millions of people may genuinely accept, according to Buterin. The main objective is to create applications that fulfill all of the fundamental reasons why we are in this field in the first place while also being simple and approachable enough for average people to utilize.
Buterin stated that developers now need to figure out how to appeal to cryptocurrency users of all skill levels without depending on centralized infrastructure, since focus is moving away from Ethereum’s Layer 1 mainnet and toward its expanding Layer 2 and application ecosystem.
Buterin went on, “We want applications that are really friendly to people who are coming into crypto for the first time.” However, we do not want any apps that lead to a cryptocurrency where everyone interacts with the system through a Google account and there is a decentralized infrastructure in theory.
Buterin stated that finding ways to satisfy both audiences will be crucial in enabling mainstream adoption, even though he noted that few solutions made for beginners will also appeal to expert users. According to him, you want something that benefits both parties and provides a smooth transition for users between them.
Buterin also emphasized the part that CeFi companies—such as Base’s parent company, Coinbase—can play in assisting in the onboarding of casual cryptocurrency users. Many users are purchasing and storing coins; the main query is, what other activities can we support the tens of millions of users in starting to do? stated Buterin.
Increasing interoperability across chains
However, Buterin emphasized that developers need to focus on lowering the barriers to asset transfers and dApp access over several Layer 2 networks.
Our goal is for an Ethereum environment, encompassing the Layer 2s, to have an Ethereum-like experience rather than 34 distinct blockchains. We don’t have that yet, according to Buterin.
Buterin called on developers working on account abstraction to prioritize research into enhancing interoperability across Layer 2 networks and championed ERC-3370 and ERC-7683 as upcoming improvements aiming to facilitate cross-chain transfers.
If you consider the parts of account abstraction that are still unresolved as of right now, Buterin stated, “I believe that having a positive cross-chain experience is probably the biggest part.”
Base on course to achieve decentralization in Stage 1 by 2025
Buterin emphasized that developers should prioritize moving towards more decentralized design as Layer 2 development becomes more and more of a focus. He also reiterated his previous claim that rollup chains showing Stage 0 decentralization should not be referred to as “rollups” at all.
Layer 2s that use a centralized process to submit state roots to the Ethereum mainnet for finalization are referred to as Stage 0 decentralization.
According to Buterin, Stage 1 decentralization keeps limited training wheels in place. The chain hosts a centralized security council that can override permissionless state root submission in the event of a bug—as long as the security council and chain operator agree on that. When all contract upgrades are subject to a 30-day wait and modifications to the state root can only be done in the event of a problem, stage 2 decentralization is reached.
Base will “definitely” accomplish Stage 1 decentralization by 2025, according to Pollak. The remarks follow Base’s testnet rollout of fault proofs last week, which cleared the path for Stage 1 decentralization.
In a few months, according to Pollak, we’ll be at Stage 1, complete with a security council and fault proofs live on the mainnet.
Buterin also gave Optimism credit for achieving Stage 1 decentralization on the OP Mainnet in June.
