- On Saturday night, rapper Drake’s X account seems to have been compromised and used to advertise a Solana memecoin based on the rapper’s cartoon “alter ego” to his following of over 39 million.
- Before traders realized that the posts, which were eventually removed, were fraudulent, the memecoin saw $5 million in trading volume.
- In recent weeks, a number of well-known X accounts have been similarly exploited.
On Saturday night, it appears that a Solana memecoin based on Canadian superstar Drake’s cartoon “alter ego” was promoted through his X account.
A post by a since-deleted X account pitching a memecoin allegedly named Anita—named after Drake’s cartoon “alter ego” Anita Max Wynn, a cartoon character inspired by his love of gambling—was reposted and subsequently referenced by Drake, whose real name is Aubrey Drake Graham.
The fake articles also stated that Drake’s preferred cryptocurrency betting site, Stake, was involved in the memecoin’s introduction. The phony currency “$ANITA” is named after the rapper’s Anita Max Wynn Tour, which will mark Drake’s first trip back to Australia and New Zealand since 2017.
After being advertised to Drake’s more than 39 million X followers, the memecoin saw $5 million in trading volume before buyers apparently recognized it was a scam and stopped purchasing. Later, Drake deleted the posts from his account.
The most recent well-known X account to be hacked in recent weeks was Drake’s. Last Sunday, a memecoin scam was promoted by exploiting the Cardano Foundation’s X account, which received only a tenth of the volume of “$ANITA.” Metallica, Doja Cat, and Cardi B are among the other well-known musicians who have been hacked.
