950 million people use Telegram amid the surge in cryptocurrency gaming

  • The multipurpose messaging program Telegram is becoming the preferred platform for cryptocurrency gamers, enjoying unheard-of popularity.

The popularity of games on Telegram is exploding, leading to a surge in the global user base. The CEO and founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, declared on Monday that there are now 950 million active users on the messaging service each month.

He wrote, up from 900 million in the spring. Aiming for a billion dollars!

The enormous popularity of cryptocurrency games on Telegram and the emergence of The Open Network (TON), which Telegram first founded before giving up on the project in 2020 because to legal issues, surely contributed to the milestone being reached more quickly. Instead, the chain was made possible by an outside development community.

Notcoin, a straightforward tap-to-earn game that awarded players massive sums of in-game coins and promised an on-chain prize in the future, was the game that started the recent gaming frenzy. Millions of players registered and began amassing virtual money in the hopes of eventually turning it into real cryptocurrency tokens.

That happened in May when TON allowed Notcoin users to exchange their earnings for NOT tokens. With the help of significant exchanges OKX and Binance, the NOT token airdrop quickly rose to prominence as the year’s largest gaming token launch. With a $17 billion market capitalization, TON is now ranked as the tenth largest cryptocurrency.

However, Hamster Kombat paved the way while Notcoin opened the door. With a similar tap-to-earn mechanism, adorable hamsters, and numerous methods to get more and faster, the game became viral. It even caught the attention of the Iranian government, which was concerned that its popularity among its people would divert them from their upcoming presidential election, when it reached 100 million users in June.

Durov said earlier this month that 239 million people have played Hamster Kombat, making the game the fastest-growing digital service globally. Hamster Kombat states that it has surpassed 250 million players since then.

Subsequently, numerous other games have been released, such as W-Coin, TapSwap, Catizen, PixelTap, Yescoin, and Musk Empire. A few of these games have already started working together; for example, Notcoin holders can benefit from PixelTap and Musk Empire’s offerings.

Similar to Notcoin, PixelTap’s token is already operational on Ethereum ahead of its intended migration to TON, while Hamster Kombat has said that it would introduce its own token on TON.

Although Telegram essentially turned over control of TON to the community in 2020 due to government regulators scrutinizing the firm, the well-known messaging app has since reintegrated the network in a number of ways, one of which is to split ad money with Telegram channel owners.
